Are You a Rug Person or a No Rug Person?
You either love them or avoid them like that one high-maintenance plant you swore never to buy again.
But here’s the truth: rugs are that one element in a space that instantly adds warmth, luxury, and character, provided you choose the right size and a right textured rug.
I’m from Delhi, and I design homes mostly in and around the city. I’ve seen clients on both sides of the fence. So, let’s divide the world into two categories (dramatic, I know, but fun):
Rug People and No Rug People.
Let’s see which one you are.
For the Rug People: We See You!
If you love rugs, you probably appreciate cozy living rooms, layered styling, and well-anchored furniture layouts. But—let’s not forget—Delhi is dusty and high-maintenance pieces like rugs need care.
So here are some smart rug maintenance tips for city living:
Rug Care Tips for Urban Homes:
Vacuum at least once a week – and don’t skip the underside!
Keep a no-shoes policy indoors – it helps more than you think.
Use a rug pad – this avoids slippage and reduces wear and tear.
Go for machine-washable or outdoor rugs -These are great for households with kids and pets.
Sun it out every 3-4 months to kill bacteria and reduce moisture.
Spray mild disinfectants on rugs that handle heavy footfall.
Avoid wool rugs near kitchens/dining – synthetic blends are easier to clean.
Rug Size Guide: Because Tiny Rugs Are a Design Crime
Loving rugs is not enough—you’ve got to get the size right. Too small and it’ll look like a bathmat. Too large and it’ll eat up your space visually.
🤔 No Rug, No Problem – But You Still Want the Vibe?
I get it. Rugs = cleaning + dust + worrying about spills.
But you still want that soft, grounded, curated feeling in your interiors.
Let me tell you: you don’t need a rug to achieve that effect.
Here are some smart alternatives:
💡 Rug Replacements That Still Bring Warmth:
Patterned floor tiles under dining areas or foyers
Wooden or herringbone flooring layouts
Stenciled or inlay flooring designs
Vinyl floor mats or carpet tiles – easy to clean and replace
Layered furniture styling with floor poufs, plants, and low ottomans
For dining areas especially, I personally love a tile border or motif inlay under the table—it gives you that visual anchor without any rug fuss or a budget spike.
So, Are You a Rug Person or a No Rug Person?
There’s no wrong answer.
Just remember: whether you go plush or pattern, grounding your furniture layout is key to making a space feel cohesive.
Let your taste, lifestyle, city, pets, decide for you—then design around that.
